Ever dreamt about traveling the Galapagos, but worried that it would be impossible on the budget you have?
What if you could less than 100$ a day in one of the world’s most sought-after holiday destinations? I’m happy to tell you that you that this is not a dream, but a feasible reality that you can do with us! Let me break down the details for you.
Day 1: Arrival and touring San Christobal Island
The cheapest way to get to Galapagos from Ecuador is between Quito, Ecuador and Baltra Airport, Galapagos (GPS). Baltra is the airport for Santa Cruz, even though it is physically located on a different island. After landing in Baltra, we will be immediately transported to Puorto Ayora, Santa Cruz by bus and ferry.
We will most likely arrive San Christobal around lunchtime, and would then walk around one kilometer to get to our hostel called Hostal San Fransisco. After checking into our hostel we will go on a tour of the island with a taxi, stopping at Puerto Chino (white sandy beach), La Galapaguera (to see giant tortoises for free), Cerro Colorado and El Junco (fresh water lagoon).
Day 2: San Christobal–> Santa Cruz –> Isabela
We will take a two hour ferry ride to Santa Cruz, departing San Christobal at 7am. Here we will have around four hours which will enough to visit Las Grietas, some chrystal clear waters with colorful fish which make for a perfect snorkeling adventure. To reach the trail we will have to take a short water taxi each way, while we leave our luggage by the check in at the ferry dock. We should pick up our bags at 1:30 pm and board the boat to Isabela at 2:00 pm. Upon arrival we will either walk one kilometer or take a water taxi to our hostel called Gladismar.
Day 3: Isabela Island Tour
Today we will do another taxi tour to the Cave of Sucre, Mirador el Mango, flamingo pools, and the Arnaldo Tupiza Tortoise Breeding Center. The tour will end at the tortoise breeding center, only 1.5 kilometers walk from town along a nice trail. The trail ends at the edge of town at Iguana Crossing, a boardwalk where marine iguanas cross the street towards the rocks to sun after feeding in the water. From there we can walk to the dock to watch animals in the shallow bay. Off the dock you can also snorkel and see sea lions, iguanas, fish, penguins, stingrays and turtles.
Day 4: More Isabela Island Exploring
We will start the day with a snorkeling tour to “Los Tuneles”- a vast landscape of lava formed arcs in the water. You might be able to see many exotic animals up close, including sharks, blue footed boobies, tortoise, penguins and a seahorse.
In the afternoon you can opt to take a walk along a road starting at Iguana Crossing ending at the Wall of Tears, where we can make detours to view the playa del amor, the tunnel of estero, the pools of devils, and Orchilla hill. The entire path will take us through a variety of complex wetlands and features a section roaming with wild tortoise. The entire walk is approximately 14 kilometers, including all the side paths.
Day 5: Isabela to San Christobal
We will get up at 5:40 am to catch the boat to San Cristóbal, again with a four-hour stopover in Santa Cruz. In Santa Cruz we can take a taxi tour of the highlands. Here we can go to the Fausto Llerena Breeding Center, Los Gemelos, and lava tunnels.
Day 6: Snorkelling San Christobal
We will have a relaxed day and walk around Tijeretas Hill where we can go through the interpretive center, Playa Mann, Playa Punta Carola, and snorkeled in the bay of Tijeretas Hill. The water here is full of huge schools of small colorful fish. Near the rocks we will have the chance to snorkel with some playful sea lions. If you are lucky a mantaraya might make an appearance. We will spend the afternoon at Loberia, a coral sand beach known for its sea lions and iguanas.
Day 6: Departure Day
Today we will be heading back to the mainland the same way we came.
