Highlights of Iraq

Proposed itinerary for Highlights of Iraq Trip:

Day 1: arrival day in Baghdad

● Meet and greet in Baghdad, where we will give a pre-trip briefing at our hotel in the evening.
● We will go for dinner together and we’ll answer any questions about the trip.

Day 2: Baghdad => Taq Kasra => Baghdad 

● Visit Taq Kasra and the archeological site called “the Arch of Ctesiphon”. 

● We will have a local surprise experience in Taq Kasra where you can expect to fill your stomachs with delicious Iraqi home cooked food.

● If time permits we can go and visit the natural reserve for the Iraqi Gazelle “Al Reem”.
● The rest of the day will be spent exploring places of interest in Baghdad.

Day 3: Baghdad => Babylon => Karbala

● Drive to Babylon to have a guided tour of the archeological site, seeing the historical walls, the reconstructed Ishtar Gate, the Lion of Babel, and the death place of Alexander the great. Alos we might visit the Babylonian Theater – The Theater is under maintenance operation.

We will walk through the nearby park to have lunch at a local restaurant on the river (Fish in the Park is recommended – It cost 10$ per person). After lunch we can explore the Governmental Palace “Built during Saddam Hussain time but he never visited it once it was completed”.

If time permits, we can have a quick boat ride on the Shatt Al Hilla, one of the Euphrates River branches. 

● After exploring Babylon we will drive to Karbala to see Imam Hussein and Abbas shrines, which are visited by millions of pilgrims each year.

Day 4: Karbala => Kifil => Najaf

● After doing some more exploring of Karbala we will drive to Khan An Nukhaylah which is a row of houses that were constructed during the Ottoman era by the great Suleiman Pasha. They were used as resting places for visitors between Basra and Syria. It was given the name Khan al-Rub’u,literally meaning ‘The Quarter,’ due to its location being a quarter of the distance from Karbala to Najaf. Above the main entrance on the east side is a large dome placed over an Islamic style of structure based on the Alawawins. It also contains pointed arches of a distinctive Islamic architectural type.

● We will visit the holy shrine of Imam Ali, as well as visiting nearby sites such as Wadi Us-Salaam, the largest cemetery in the World and have a stroll around the Corniche of the Najaf Sea.

● We will visit the tomb of prophet Ezekiel in the city of Al Kilf. What makes this place special is its shared history and importance for both Muslim and Jewish devotees.

Day 5: Najaf => Kufa => Al Diwaniyah => Baghdad

Visit Masjid Al-Kufa, which is one of the oldest surviving mosques in the world. 

● Drive to Diwaniyah where we will have a photo opportunity at the monument with the biggest Iraqi flag in the World.

● Drive to Nippur, an ancient Sumerian city which was the seat of worship of the god Enlil, which by Sumerians was the ruler of the cosmos.

● Visit King Ghazi Summer Palace – which is today a museum that illustrates the history of the royal family and their contribution in the evolution of the country Iraq after throughout the millennia.

Day 6: Baghdad => Tall Akarkuf => Samarra => Baghdad

● There will be time set aside for covid testing, with results being ready for pickup the following morning. We will do our best to facilitate arrangements for those who are departing earlier.

● Continue driving North to Samarra, which once was the biggest mosque in the World. Here we will have time to explore the shrine of Imam Al-Askari as well as the iconic minaret.

● Drive to Tall Akarkuf to explore a Ziggurat called Dur-Kurigalzu.

Day 7: Baghdad (end of program in the evening)

● We will try to cover as much of the sights in Baghdad as possible, such as:

  • Al Mutanabbi street (with the Al-Mutanabbi statue) – the site of the first book traders’ market. Here also we can visit Al Mustansiriya School from Abbasid era, Qishla Clock, ride a boat in the Tigris and The copper market Souk al-Safareen, The small shops, cafés etc that Baghdad is famous for.
  • Al Kadhimiya mosque and shrine with Gold Market and visit to Aadhamiya, Abu Hanifa Mosque and the Royal Family Cemetery. 
  • Martyrs Monument (Al-Shaheed Monument) only from outside.
  • Zawra Park (including “save the Iraqi culture monument”) and Baghdad Zoo.
  • Modern Baghdad, malls, The Station coworking space and art center, Jadiriya and Mansour areas.
